Described by the Kololo tribe living in the area in the 1800s as 'Mosi-oa-Tunya' (the smoke that thunders), it is known as the greatest curtain of falling water in the world. At the height of the rainy season, an astonishing five hundred million cubic metres of water per minute plummets over the edge, over a width spanning nearly two kilometres, into a gorge over one hundred metres below. The Chobe floodplains and Chobe River provide a sensitive ecosystem where the wildlife of Botswana congregate during the dry season. These floodplains are home to thousands of elephants, along with a host of other animals and birds. But the highlight of a visit to Chobe National Park is the combination of wildlife, birdlife and reptiles that inhabit the banks of the Chobe River, a major watering spot, presenting the perfect photographic opportunity.
