Taj Cape Town, South Africa
This recently opened hotel in Cape Town's CBD cleverly links the old with the new. Its 177 rooms and suites blend seamlessly across two heritage buildings and a new, beautifully appointed 17-storey tower wing that houses suites, guest rooms and residences with grandstand views of the city and imposing Table Mountain. Completed in 1932, the corner site was the original South African Reserve Bank whose design was inspired by the Pitti Palace in Florence. Its striking exterior is constructed of Paarl granite, while its front gates, window grilles and front doors are made of exquisitely detailed bronze. What was once a bustling banking hall with impressive marble pillars is now part of the hotel's foyer and reception. The adjacent Temple Chambers has a history dating back to 1896 and was so named in deference to the barristers of the Supreme Court who had their offices there. Guests who love curry should consider the hotel's sensational Bombay Brasserie and for fresh seafood or oysters and champagne, try The Twankey. www.tajhotels.com/capetown
