Sofitel Legend The Grand Amsterdam, Netherlands A registered historic monument, this building dates back to the 15th century when it was a staging post for the royals. Over the years it also housed the plucky Dutch Admiralty when Holland ruled the seas and was even the Amsterdam City Hall before being transformed into one of the city's most outstanding hotels. Still today, marriages are celebrated in the main hall of the hotel where indeed the current Queen Beatrix married Claus von Amsberg 45 years ago. On arrival, today's guests are greeted by an attendant in formal attire complete with top hat, who sets the stage for the impressive blend of modern and historic elements within – such as hand-carved doors and a grand white marble staircase. While exuding a sort of "grand bourgeois", the building has been beautifully restored to offer accommodation in 182 rooms and suites, while retaining the spirit of its historical importance. www.sofitel.com 62 www.travelandliving.com.au
