Luna Hotel
Baglioni Venice, Italy
This historic hotel dates from 1118 when it offered rest and refreshment to tired travellers, including the Knights Templar en route to crusades in the Holy Lands. It was known as Locanda della Luna or The Moonlight Tavern, and became the first established hotel in Venice. After several incarnations as a convent and a palace for local aristocracy, it reverted to offering accommodation and is now one of the the most exclusive hotels in Venice. During the 18th century the building was decorated with frescoes by students of Venetian artist Gianbattista Tiepolo, and these now adorn the sumptuous Marco Polo Ballroom. Other original details still grace the building which today offers 69 rooms and 35 suites. The hotel's romantic Canova Restaurant enjoys one of the most idyllic locations on the lagoon and there is a private mooring-berth where gondolas and sleek water-taxis can transport guests right to the hotel entrance. www.baglionihotels.com
