A pair of 194kW D4 Volvo Penta supercharged and turbocharged marine diesels drive Volvo Penta DPH Duo-Prop sternlegs. These units were chosen because of their proven ability in the commercial world. They offer a wide power band with long legs and good fuel economy. Another major benefit is the counter-rotating propellers can chop seaweed. The Volvos have a top speed of 38 knots, better than the design speed of 35 knots. At a more leisurely service speed of 26 knots, her 900 litres of diesel provide an effective range of 400 miles, enabling her to operate from Raglan to Nelson. During engine trials, with full tanks and eight people on board at 28 knots, both engines burnt 68 litres per hour or 2.44 litres per mile. Pyrotek noise control insulation in the engine bay reduces the sound from these puppies to a whisper. A Sidepower bowthruster aids manoeuvring, especially when taking the boat on the trailer in difficult seas or when recovering someone from the water. A large, fully fenced boarding platform protects the sternlegs, with enough clearance so the legs can be fully raised. This, and the swing-down boarding ladder in the centre of the stern, allows the crew to quickly cut away weed or ropes fouling the propellers. A grab rail under the platform also helps swimmers in the water, while two life rings are mounted on the rear fence. A solid door in the transom opens to provide entry from the boarding platform onto the fully self-draining cockpit or safe area. To starboard is a davit and a small hauling drum for lifting people, not crayfish pots, out of the water. This complements a new man-overboard recovery system designed to lift an unconscious person, or swimmers who have been in the water for a long time. The risk here is the possible onset of "circum-rescue collapse", a medical condition resulting from when hydrostatic pressure on the legs and body causes lowered blood volume through urination. If the body is lifted vertically when recovering someone by a rescue strop, for instance, the sudden drop in pressure as blood returns to the legs from the torso can lead to a cardiac arrest once the person is on board. Her full-size stretcher may be carried through the deckhouse into the for'ard medical support cabin. This area has two V-berths or seats, with wooden cabinets to hold a wide range of medical and emergency supplies. A Volvo QL heater running off the port engine has four outlets, three to demist and heat the deckhouse and one to warm the for'ard cabin. A marine toilet is to starboard, in front of the helm, and opposite is an equal-sized enclosed space that may be used for a variety of options, including a small galley. A small heater is used to boil water or heat ready-made food for crew and passengers. As we step back up into the deckhouse we note the two KAB sprung safety seats. One is for the helmstation to starboard, while to port is the navigator or rescue controller's position. There are bench seats for four other crew or passengers in this space. To ensure good access to potable water, the vessel carries 120 litres in an onboard polyethylene tank that supplies the head and a freshwater shower outlet in the cockpit. Access to the foredeck is reasonable around the side, with ample grab rails. Another raised grab rail is in the central position for those working on the foredeck, which has space for an eight-man Zodiac liferaft with a hydrostatic release near the for'ard escape hatch.
