Its cities deliver art and dazzling culture, while its countryside reveals rugged mountains and bountiful groves. The sophisticated international playgrounds of Madrid and Barcelona are a true delight by day and by night. Abundant treasures of past and present are found in spectacular museums, glorious architecture, chic cafés and glittering nightspots. Travel into the smaller regions and charming towns to uncover an entirely different side of Spain. Geographically, Spain's diversity is immense and contradictory. Since it averages about three hundred days of sunshine per year, its temperate climate enables visitors to fully enjoy beautiful sunlit beaches within popular resorts offering leisure and entertainment facilities, shops, and a plethora of outdoor activities. Spain's majestic countryside is filled with opportunities to visit wildlife parks as well as to do some trekking. Its mountain region is home to peaceful alpine lakes, glaciers, national parks and game reserves. 74 Spain Spain's cities are steeped in history and rich in culture, boasting some of the world's finest architecture and breathtaking landscapes. Narrow, twisting old streets suddenly open out to views of daring modern edifices, while bars serving wine from the barrel rub shoulders with blaring, glaring discos. Take in a bullfight, run with the bulls or attend a spirited fiesta… it's all here for you to enjoy. The land is filled with superb old buildings, from Roman aqueducts and Islamic palaces to Gothic cathedrals. Almost every second village has a medieval castle. Its tremendous history is reflected in its prehistoric cave paintings, Moorish palaces, Roman ruins, Gothic and Renaissance cathedrals, and so much more. Spain has been the home of some of the world's great artists, such as El Greco, Velázquez, Goya, Dalí and Picasso, and has museums and galleries to match. The country vibrates with music of every kind, from the drama of flamenco to the melancholy lyricism of the Celtic music and bagpipes of the northwest.
