MADRID Spain's glittering capital lives up to its reputation as a chic and trendy hotspot. From dusk to dawn, it comes alive to the sensual beat of flamenco. Madrid is not only the very popular cultural center of Spain, but is also its geographic center. No visit to Madrid would be complete without experiencing the legendary nightlife. Its pubs, bars and restaurants make it one of the world's liveliest cities, where you can often see a Flamenco performance after a meal of mouthwatering tapas and local wines. A haven for fine culture, Madrid is home to more than 70 museums, including the Museo del Prado - one of the world's best, which proudly displays masterworks of Spanish-born geniuses, including Goya and Velazquez, and other world-famous artists such as Raphael, Botticelli and Bosch. Exquisite art can also commonly be found in the forms of architecture, sculptures and fountains along the Calle de Alcalá, Paseo del Prado and throughout the city. The Royal Palace is a vision of elegance inside and out, and the Parque del Retiro is a lush urban respite from the bustle of the city featuring thousands of different species of plants and trees, and picturesque statues that represent kings and queens of long ago. Also not to be missed is Madrid's largest open-air flea market, "El Rastro", held in the historic city center every Sunday. Said to be the largest flea market in Europe, it extends through several streets in one of the city's oldest neighborhoods. Established in the Middle Ages, its hub is the Plaza de Cascorro, which features a statue of legendary soldier Eloy Gonzalo. Exciting local festivals like Carnival also play a prominent cultural role with parades, costume parties and celebrations that honor traditions and patrons alike. This vibrant metropolis is a great starting point to all the best that Spain has to offer.
