news&views MARSUPIAL DOWN UNDER A rare fossil of the largest marsupial to have ever lived was recently discovered at a cattle station in the Northern Territory. It is the fossil of a diprotodon, a large four-legged marsupial that stood about two metres tall, weighed nearly three tonnes and is a distant relative of the wombat. It is also the first fossil of the megafauna (giant creatures that existed between 12,000 and 2.5 million years ago) to be found in the Northern Territory – most similar fossils have been found in southern Australia. The fossilised limb of the prehistoric creature is now in the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory. OPEN NOW As the school year comes to a close, it's time to start thinking about your child's education in future years. Boarding scholarships for girls entering Years 7 and 9 in 2014 are among the scholarships on offer at Wenona in North Sydney, which has been celebrating excellence in girls' education since 1886. "Wenona's boarders have always been a really important part of what makes our school extraordinary," says Wenona principal Dr Briony Scott. "In our earlier years, it was the country boarders who helped bring new ideas and experiences into our school, broadening the worlds of the city girls, and vice versa. "These days, it is no different, except that we have boarders from even further afield, such as China and France, as well as Lord Howe Island, Darwin, Bombala and Orange." Applications for 2014 scholarships will close on February 22, 2013. Testing will take place on March 1, 2013. A Wenona scholarship offers full or part remission of fees and is offered at the discretion of the principal on the basis of the test results and interviews that follow. Wenona is a non-denominational day and boarding school for girls from Kindergarten to Year 12. For more information visit www. BOARDING SCHOLARSHIPS wenona.nsw.edu.au. SPYWARE APP RAISES CONTROVERSY A phone spyware application, mainly used to catch cheating spouses, raises controversy and privacy issues. The app allows a person to have access to phone calls, texts, calendar dates and even the GPS location of the phone owner, without him or her knowing. The app, which would have to be secretly installed on the person's phone, is supplied by companies such as Spousebusters, a private investigation firm that specialises in outing cheating spouses. The app has raised interest among parents who would like to monitor their children and it could also be handy for locating a stolen phone. However, the issue of privacy and security breaches remains, particularly for the safety of women fleeing abusive ex-partners. Because of technology's rapid evolution, there are currently no precise laws governing the use of spyware. Peter Black, a senior lecturer in internet law at QUT, says it could be an area of the law in need of reform.
