New industry organisation THE NEW FISHING year starting October 1, also marks the beginning of a new national industry organisation called Seafood New Zealand, which will now be the public face of the industry taking over the operational roles previously undertaken by SeaFIC. Seafood New Zealand is: • A central, cooperative seafood industry-wide organisation focused on providing a range of services to the seafood industry and Sector Representative Entities • Greater sector-specific representation and responsibility via five SRE's including the already established aquaculture, deepwater, paua, rock lobster, and an emerging inshore finfish sector entity. • A dedicated focus on industry strategy through Seafood Strategy New Zealand Limited, aimed at ensuring a broader strategic perspective for the industry. Dave Sharp, Chairman of the New Zealand Seafood Industry Council says the changes will achieve a more coordinated whole-of-industry approach while enabling improved representation for the diversity of industry participants through targeted services. BIGGEST MARINE PARK IN THE WORLD COOK ISLANDS PRIME Minister Henry Puna announced at the annual Pacific Islands Forum in August, that the Cook Islands Government has committed to a one million square kilometre marine park, the largest single marine park in the world. This is a renewal of the challenge he made last year to the international community at the Eye on Earth Summit in Abu Dhabi. The Geographic Information System software company ESRI and the University of California at Santa Barbara have committed to building a database to aid in spatial planning of the one million square kilometre park. The project will begin in early 2013 and will take eight months. The park is the largest single area in history claimed by a single country for integrated ocean conservation and management. "The marine park will provide the necessary framework to promote sustainable development by balancing economic growth interests such as tourism, fishing and deep sea mining with conserving core biodiversity in the ocean," Puna said. World Bank senior coastal and marine specialist Marea Hatziolos, said the park would include a main area where all fishing would be banned, plus special zones where tourism and carefully monitored fishing would be allowed to let commercially valuable species such as tuna recover. Kevin Iro of the Cook Islands Marine Park Steering Committee commented that the range of expertise and technological innovation on display at the summit was remarkable: "It has become even clearer to me that not only is the Cook Islands on the right track in developing our marine park for the benefit of our own future generations, but also as a significant contribution to the future of the global oceans." Australia announced in June that it was creating a number of marine parks in its territorial waters to form a network that would protect a total of more than three million square kilometres of ocean. • The economical solution where cost is a key factor • With up to 18 months good antifouling protection • Reduced build up of leached layers • Can be u/w scrubbed • The high performance solution • Linear and predictable polishing rate • Predictable antifouling performance on all types of vessels for up to 60 months • Ultimate fuel saver • Thin film build for long term protection • Upwards of 2 years protection with one coat at 75 microns • This is half of what some antifoulings recommend • Longer life protection (up to 5 years) Aluminium Anti-fouling (For Aluminium Vessels) SeaSafe • Tin free • High performance • Self polishing • Up to 2 years protection • 1lt sizes for stern leg protection (compare this with other aluminium antifoulings) Marine Gensets from 4 to 99kW.
