AMPHIBIOUS? MAYBE! BY KEITH INGRAM This is one interesting looking workboat A recent peek in the doors of Commando Boats revealed a hive of activity with sparks flying off a number of boats all under construction. Inside the door was a SEMAC prototype being built, behind which was another chunky barge destined for the Pacific Islands, while around the walls and out the door were a number of the D tube Commando boats that the company has become recognised for. But it was an interesting looking vessel nearing completion to the side that took our eye. Here was, what can only be described as a general purpose utility amphibious style barge. And one with a prod! (Sorry, extendable draw bar and deployable wheels!) Designed by Scott Robson, this unique looking barge was being built for the Auckland Council so that its Mahurangi Park rangers would have an improved 16 Professional Skipper November/December 2012 Vented tote tank lockers vessel to meet their needs when servicing parks and islands in the Kawau region. Incorporating a unique rocker hull form under a barge-like vessel, along with a retractable draw bar and wheels, this was something out of the box. The specification was diverse because the rangers' work is equally diverse, from beach clean ups, wildlife and pest control to bird dogs tracking and monitoring local kiwi. The barge will be powered by twin 50hp outboards. It is designed to retain a good sea keeping quality and arrive at a beach or island, unload a quad bike, deploy the wheels and draw bar, hook on, and then tow the barge along with its remaining cargo up the beach to a safe place out of harm's way above the high tide line. It has been designed to fulfil a number of tasks and may carry a cargo of 900kgs plus crew. It is also large enough to carry
