MASTER CLASS :p is for purple and passion P is for PURPLE … and Passion THIS MAY BE ONE of the last times you'll see the Editor-in-Chief of My Wedding and Let's Travel Magazines, Gayle Dickson, toting her brown locks. Late October will see this livewire editor proudly sporting bright purple hair. Yes, you read right … purple! Gayle is committing to just over a year of the whacky colour as she embarks on a campaign to raise funds for CanTeen. "I decided on purple because it's so eye-catching. I did consider a luridly bright pink, but felt that purple was more my colour, and it's still 'loud' enough to attract attention." The intention is to remain purple for just over a year, aiming towards a full shave of her head during Bandana Challenge 2013. "That's the intention," she grinned. "Whether I am brave enough to go through with it remains to be seen! Mind you, I guess I could just stock up on a range of colourful bandanas to wear for the next wee while as my hair grows back! Worst case, if I do chicken out of the shave, I will have hopefully raised heaps in the year of fundraising. Who knows - if I raise enough, perhaps it will inspire me to do a year in another colour … or hopefully inspire others to step out of their comfort zones and do something whacky to raise much needed funds." When questioned as to why, Gayle simply stated "Because I can. As the Editor of two thriving magazines, I don't have much free time on my hands. This is one way I can raise the profile of the great work being done by CanTeen. "We recently had a close shave ourselves with our teenage son being diagnosed with a tumour in his femur. Thank God it was benign, but friends of ours weren't so lucky. Their physically fit, very active and otherwise extremely healthy teenage son is facing an uphill battle with leukemia." Its bad enough dealing with the mental anguish of being diagnosed with cancer, but being a teenager and facing the Big C must be really tough. "Their hormones are bouncing around as if on steroids and today's lifestyles can only complicate the range of emotions they experience. Having to add cancer and treatment plans into the mix must be a nightmare to deal with. "CanTeen does a wonderful job of supporting young people through the tough time of diagnosis and treatment. When you're faced with a life-altering diagnosis, you must surely believe it's the end of the world. How wonderful to have the support of other young people who have 'been there, done that'; peers who can understand how you're feeling, provide encouragement and give you inspiration. "While I admire the fundraising that goes on to find cures, I believe it's just as important to support those for whom that research is too late." Getting to know Editor-in-Chief of My Wedding and Let's Travel Magazines, Gayle Dickson Not only will Gayle sport a head of purple hair, kindly coloured and maintained by the fabulous Olivia Davies of Servilles in Mission Bay, she's also committed to providing a percentage of all advertising revenue from both her magazines over the next year. "We're in the process of setting up pages on both our websites and will blast this out through various social media channels in the near future! The hope is that we can gain massive corporate support for this campaign." Bandanas can be purchased from the CanTeen website at only $5 each (www.canteen.org.nz).
