WHAT VEGETABLES TO PLANT NOW: Most vegetables can be planted out now, yet take care with tomatoes as they will require protection from frosts. Cucumbers, chillies, eggplant and peppers are in the same boat; don't plant outdoors until those cold Waikato frosts have finished. Also try planting basil with tomatoes to improve flavour. All vegetables will benefit from a side dressing of blood and bone or a general garden fertiliser. Dust cabbages and cauliflowers with derris dust to prevent white butterfly caterpillar.

Lawns Apply a slow release professional lawn food to your lawn to promote continual even growth during the year. If there are areas which are mossy, brown, sparse, water logged or just not growing well, spike the area with your garden fork. Insert the fork into the lawn and then lever it back to let more air in. Repeat every 7.5cm over the problem area. Spray with Turfix for broad leaf weeds and Prickle Weedkiller to control Onehunga weed and stop the summer prickles.
WHAT TREES AND FLOWERS TO PLANT
NOW: Watch out for insects as they love the fresh new shoots. Start applying your Shield and Gild at the first sign of attack. Aphids may start to become a problem so keep an eye out for any infestation and if necessary, spray with NO Insects or Disease Spectrum. Begin watering your roses now, making sure to keep the water off the foliage to prevent pest and diseases. Mulch perennials, trees and shrubs to help conserve soil moisture by using compost, bark or peat. Install in-ground watering systems for economical summer watering.
Container Gardening It's hanging basket time. Add Saturaid to your containers now to help them absorb water through the summer months. Replant your older containers and pots with fresh patio and tub mix to give your plants a boost of life. Liquid fertilise your indoor plants with Phostrogen. Remove any dead or damaged leaves.
