Homegrown Reads Hunter from the Heartland Cameron Petley Random House New Zealand, $49.99 Cameron was hugely popular in Series 2 of MasterChef NZ - an unassuming country bloke who cooked what he caught and hunted for his family. What's more, the judges thought he was a 'genius with flavour', able to understand what ingredients worked together perfectly - without any training at all. Judge Josh Emmet said that Cam's venison was the best he'd ever tasted. Now head chef at the refurbished Putaruru Hotel, Cameron's food draws in diners from all over the region and from far afield. Hunter from the Heartland contains about 40 excellent recipes for fish, seafood, pork, lamb, beef and poultry. Plus there are some great yarns from Cam about how he got into hunting, some of his best trips fishing and hunting as well as some tips for catching various wildlife. It's a perfect gift for men and anyone who loves to cook tasty, hearty food for the family. Hello, my name is Dominic Harvey and I am an idiot. Ever since the movie The Bucket List came out in 2008, people have been creating their own lists of things to do before they kick the bucket. Some of the things on these lists look so difficult that I wonder if dying would be a better option than actually ticking off the items. The purpose of these lists seems to be to make the list maker feel like they are doing something more with their life than sitting around writing lists and watching Morgan Freeman DVDs. I am a paid-up life-member of a place called the comfort zone. People always go on about the importance of getting out of your comfort zone. Not me. Any day I can stay inside it is a good day. All of which makes it a bit odd that I decided to complete a bucket list of my own. Not just any bucket list though. This is a reverse bucket list - a bunch of stuff that I could have happily passed away without ever doing - stuff like getting a tattoo I'd instantly regret, arm wrestling an All Black and being the model for a life drawing class - and I recruited some of my closest family and friends to compile it for me. In hindsight, this was a bad idea. But here it is - my pain, discomfort and humiliation for your pleasure - The Bucket List of an Idiot. OUR TOP PICK: The best book to read this month This Way of Life Sumner Burstyn HarperCollins NZ, $34.99 In an isolated and stunning rural New Zealand setting, Peter and Colleen Ottley- Karena raise their seven children on the thin edge between freedom and disaster. The children are brought up to respect nature, their horses and each other. Regardless of their lack of material wealth, they never lose sight of the magic in everyday tasks - collecting eggs, helping their dad to break in horses, or hunting and preparing food for their family. Untamed and unafraid, the idea of risk is alien to them. To see the seven-year-old Aurora expertly ride a massive stallion bareback with no more than a rope halter asks us to re-examine our ideas of what children are capable of. With its genesis in the multi-award-winning 2009 documentary of the same name, we see where the Ottley-Karena family is now. Faced with a range of new challenges, they approach life with characteristic dignity and strength. But is their unique lifestyle one that is sustainable in the long term?
