Method 1. Depending how wide you want your fire pit, measure a piece of string between 1-1.5 metres. Put a stake in the ground, tie one piece of the string to it and this will provide you with an accurate measurement to draw the circumference of your fire pit. Using the spray paint, mark out the outline for your pit. 2. Using the shovel, dig out the earth within your measured area. The depth of the ring should be between 10 -20 cm. 3. Line the bottom of the circle with a layer of gravel. 4. Place the first block in the ring. Using a level, check that it sits level both side to side and front to back. Make sure this first block is perfectly level and positioned correctly in the trench before moving on. 5. Lay another block next to the first one. Butt the sides together tightly and line up the front and back edges. Using the first block as a reference, level the second block side to side and front to back. 6. Lay the rest of the blocks in the trench in this manner until the ring is complete. 7. Using a caulking gun, squeeze a zigzag bead of masonry adhesive across two adjacent blocks. Lay a block on top of the glue-covered pieces, centering it over the seam between the two. Make sure any interlocking parts on the blocks fit together well. Continue until the second course is finished. 8. Repeat this step again for two additional levels. You should end up with four levels of bricks for your fire pit.
An alternative to this style of fire pit can be made on a concrete base. For this, you'll need a deep, iron dish that will sit within the brick ring you make.
