The names had been switched as an 'M' and a 'P' were found a under the prow of the Titanic name, and the difference of 3 more portholes on "c" deck of which the Olympic had more than the Titanic. The real Titanic under the switched identity of the Olympic, served as a troop carrier in WW1 then became a passenger liner. Just a historical curiosity to ponder, to get a response from those more in the know. Ed… WHO OWNS RENA? Dear Sir When the Rena sank, we were told the owners were the Costamare Shipping Company. On July 25 the New Zealand Herald said Konstantinos Zacharatos of Daina Shipping had apologised to the local dignitaries and iwi at Whareoa marae. My question to maritime researcher, Ian Farquhar, was, "who really owned the Rena?" His reply was prompt, having been involved with shipping companies for years and he knows this stuff. His reply, in case anyone is interested: "The Rena was on a term charter to the Mediterranean Shipping Company but when she hit the rock she automatically comes off charter and reverts to her owner. She is owned within the Costamare Group of Athens but companies like this, and indeed like shipping companies did historically, individual ships or a small group of ships within the group are registered to a specific company, and in this case it is Daina Shipping Company and I haven't checked but it may even be registered in Monrovia, Liberia. This means that when a disaster occurs it only affects the one company and doesn't bring down the whole Costamare group." Now we all know. Lynton Diggle, Auckland THE PRICE OF FISH Dear Sir Three days before my film The Price of Fish was screened on TV3, I was amazed to read the latest SEAFIC newsletter written by CE Peter Bodeker. In it he wrote, and I quote: "...if you are a devil for further punishment ...look at another anti-fishing doco, The Price of Fish..." Anti-fishing!!?? This just illustrates the bunker mentality of SEAFIC. My documentary was anything but anti-fishing. In fact it was very much pro-fishing, but anti-abuse of our fisheries by people who think they are above the law. Bodeker's comments suggest that SEAFIC supports the illegal practices by foreign vessels highlighted in my film, for example the illegal dumping of massive amounts of fish, or fishmealing fish they don't have quota for? Bodeker appears to support: • these illegal fishing practices, • the fact that these illegal dumping practices alone are costing our economy $300 million a year, • the human rights abuses happening daily on Korean trawlers. He also appears to: • have no interest in protecting the rights and jobs of the true Kiwi battlers, the inshore fleet whose livelihood is daily being eroded by illegal fishing practices, • have no problem with the fact that the inshore fleet has declined by over 50 percent in the last 10 years, • have no problem with the fact that the large fishing companies use their quota to keep the smaller fishers in line. One fisher I interviewed in my first film The Great New Zealand Fishing Scandal had annual quota, that gave them the cream needed to continue in business, taken away, for appearing in this film and another had a job application sabotaged for the same reason. I spoke with about 50 inshore fishers who were happy to talk with me, but wouldn't appear in either film for fear of retribution of loosing quota from the large fishing companies. This is a national disgrace, and stifles free and open debate about an industry that certainly needs a damn good discussion of what is going on, and the changes needed, and how the major companies have this industry totally by the balls. SEAFIC needs to be replaced with an organisation that truly represents Kiwi fishers who every day put their lives on the line bringing us our fish and hard earned dollars into our economy. We need an organisation that is not controlled by a few with their own selfish interests ruling the interests of the many. I would remind these large quota owners that their quota can be taken away from them, and I believe they must be threatened with this, as our country is loosing hundreds of millions of dollars a year by their inefficient use of our wonderful resource.
