LETTERS Letters to the editor are encouraged from readers who wish to say nice things, raise an industry concern, or even get something off their chest. Letters are published in good faith and may be abridged if too verbose or on the edge of being libellous. In fact, in 15 years we have only refused to publish two letters. For this reason, while we will protect an author's identity if requested by "name withheld on request", letters must be clearly marked by name and address, signed or emailed as verification of authenticity. Letters not clearly signed may not see the light of day. AQUACULTURE IS TOPS Dear Sir I have been reading Professional Skipper and NZ Aquaculture magazine which is stapled inside. It is this little magazine that has given rise to my son now seeking training and a career in aquaculture. So well done Skipper, the other option was for him to become a layabout in which he needed no additional training. Margaret Olsen, Tauranga OLD ML'S Dear Sir It was with great interest that I read the article 'Old ML's Never Die' in your May/June edition but I was surprised to see that the reason that Te Atatu Boating Club Inc had declined the request to haul out Paea was never explained. The impression given to your readers by referring to letters of support etc was that there was no valid reason for declining the application. The Club would have, if it was possible, hauled out the vessel but since the Tamure was hauled out (some 30 years ago) the ramp and apron has been revamped and we now have a weight restriction of 20 ton on this. Paea unfortunately weighs 31 ton. This was explained to Heather and Keith at the time they made their request. Neil White, Club Manager Te Atatu Boating Club Inc Your comments are noted with respect however, we also note the recent launching of the Shenandoah and another similar sized vessel that would be equal to, or heavier than, your proscribed weight restriction. Ed… FISH HAWKER REVIVAL Dear Sir Did you see Country Calendar June 23 staring Martin Hansen, his crew and his trusty little ship Conquest? I thought it was great and displayed a local community spirit that needs to be encouraged. What they are doing is so environmentally friendly as well, no trucks carting his catch to kingdom come and RETRACTION – OOPS! In the last issue we published a letter from Ian Butchart referring to a previous letter from Captain David Jensen, which related to the rules governing recreational boating activity. Somehow during our editing process this was changed to give reference to "Captain" David Ledson when this was not so. Therefore we apologise to both Ian Butchard (the author) and David Ledson (Rear Admiral Rtd) for any confusion or embarrassment suffered. Ed… back with a load of processed fish that would turn your cat away, just delivered directly to the customer and keeping local people employed. But as Martin pointed out the system we have now is simply not designed for this sort of fishing business. To cut it short, MFish or whoever, need to start looking at creating a system where this can be done with the end result of keeping it all local. Well done Country Calendar for such a great story on a man with total vision. Let's see more coastal stories like this on your show. Baden Pascoe, Auckland Baden, fishermen with 'hawkers' licenses were once common amongst our small communities and fishing ports. Sadly the introduction of the QMS and shift of quota to the major companies, all but killed them. However we are now seeing a revival around our ports and long may it continue. Ed… OLD PIRATE Dear Sir Keith you old pirate. Let me be the one to offer congratulations on behalf of all us readers and industry members. I have just read about your award in the MTA news. Well done. For an old seadog you scrub up well, must be the lovely Vivienne's influence. Seriously mate, you have done bloody well, the judges had it right on when they said; "An industry stalwart SUBSCRIBE NOW! ■ $65.00 1 year – includes NZ Workboat Review 2013 Be sure to get your copy of Professional Skipper direct by mail Please include NZ Workboat Review for 2007 @ $10.50 available now Please include NZ Workboat Review for 2006 @ $5.00 available now ■ $125.00 2 year – includes NZ Workboat Review 2013 & 2014 ($105 Australia + Asia, $145 Rest of World) $65.00 1 year – includes NZ Workboat Review 2009 ($98 Australia + Asia, $135 Rest of World) $125 2 years – includes NZ Workboat Review 2009 & 2010 Please include NZ Workboat Review 2008 @ $10.50 available now Please include NZ Workboat Review 2007 @ $5.00 available now Name _______________________________________________________________________ Address ______________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________ Postal code ________ Email _______________________________________________________________________ ENCLOSED IS A CHEQUE FOR ______________________________________________________ ■ Please include NZ Workboat Review 2012 @ $11.50 available now ■ Please include NZ Workboat Review 2010 & 2011 @ $5.00 each ■ Please include NZ Workboat Review 2008 & 2009 @ $2.50 each Visa/Mastercard (other cards not accepted) Card Number _______________________________________ Card Name ___________________________________________________________________ Signature _________________________________________________ Expiry date _____/_____ GST No: 68-684-757 Be in the draw for a fine oil painting of the NZ barque Louisa Craig by marine artist Paul Deacon.
