MALAYSIA Seri Chenang Resort & Spa Langkawi Bungkus, meaning The Seri Chenang Resort & Spa sits on the banks of Kuala Chenang River, amidst the lush tropical foliage and dramatic cliffs of Langkawi. Next to the popular Chenang Beach, the resort is set along a lush Royal Malay inspired garden, and combines traditional indigenous architecture with luxurious personalised amenities. This timeless art village-style resort comprises of six villas, each designed to replicate a traditional Malay house from different states including Negeri Sembilan, Terengganu, Kedah, Pahang, Malacca and Selangor. Featuring curved roofs, the Rumah Negeri Sembilan villa is reminiscent of the Minangkabau roof of Sumatra, and is smaller compared to the other traditional houses. The Rumah Terengganu was modelled on the traditional Malay houses found in Terengganu called Rumah Limas five-roofed house. They are easily recognised by their roofs, that consist of a straight central ridge with four shorter ridges projecting down to the edges, which is decorated with wooden carvings. What sets this villa apart is its structure—it is built entirely from Chengal wood, without using a single nail. The Rumah Pahang was designed to replicate the traditional Malay house in Pahang known as 'rumah serambi pahang', which is typically lower to the ground, and less engraved, except for its long roof gable ends which are etched with carvings. This particular type of villa is increasingly becoming extinct. Closely replicating the Selangor houses, which date back nearly 60 years, the Rumah Selangor is characterised by its long roof and skeletal structure. The villa is also known as the 'long roofed house' because of its stretched, straight, horizontal ridge with the roof ends made from double layered wood. Recognised by the multicoloured, glazed tiles—imported from Europe and China— on the staircases, the Rumah Melaka replicates the traditional Malay houses still found in Melaka today. The brilliant feature of this villa is the elegantly carved elongated roof finish, built entirely of Chengal, Maranti and Damar Laut wood. Lastly, the Rumah Kedah features an elongated horizontal roof with gable ends, noticeable on both front and back of the roofs structural design, and the kitchen roof is lower than that of the main house. With a strong focus on personalised service, combined with stunning architecture and a prime location amidst lush tropical surrounds Seri Chenang Resort & Spa is a destination in itself!
