MALAYSIA PENANG One of Asia's most famous islands, Penang is a living historic metropolis with inner city communities, places of worship, guilds, wet markets and bazaars. Its natural beauty and exotic culture has made it a must-see destination for tourists for centuries. At a total of 292 square kilometres, this turtle shaped island is both a major commercial and trading centre and a picturesque holiday spot. Established in 1786 as a British trading post, Penang is the oldest British settlement in Malaysia. A fusion of the old and the new, Penang today is a heritage city, industrial centre and busy port. Located on the northwestern coast of Peninsular Malaysia, it consists of the island of Penang and a strip of land on the mainland, Seberang Prai. 108 www.paradisesonline.com George Town, the state capital of Penang, hosts hundreds of tourists, both local and foreign, who visit to view the starting point of Penang's multicultural community. Easily surveyed on foot or by rickshaw, the historic core of George Town lies in the old-world charm of the traders, vendors and coffee shops. Penangites love an excuse for a celebration, and the multi-cultural mix of the people brings an explosion of colourful and exciting festivals that are unrivalled anywhere else in the world. With a heady mix of exotic and delicious fare, indulging in the food of Penang is a delight. 'Penang cuisine', more often than not, refers to 'hawker food.' This cheap, roadside food comes in many varieties thanks to Penang's multi-cultural character. Creating a vibrant contrast to the busier city, numerous idyllic beaches and soothing hills of Penang are only minutes away. For a quieter escape, the more remote yet stunning beaches of Muka Head, Pantai Acheh, Monkey Beach or Pantai Kerachut are perfect for solitary relaxation. Shopping in Penang is a rewarding and exciting experience. There are many antique shops spread through the vicinities of Penang Road, Chulia Street and Little India. Campbell Street is the best place to head for bargains, and bargaining is customary; so don't be afraid to haggle during your shopping spree. The night markets are something to see for inexpensive shopping and dining, and for the unusual or unique, head to the flea market at Lorong Kulit. There is so much to do in Penang. Visit Penang Bird Park, the Snake Temple, hit the beach, sample Penang cuisine and take a trishaw ride—just be sure you experience all that Penang has to offer!
