Amangalla Amangalla is in the fortified town of Galle which has a unique and rich history. Nowadays, the fort is a living monument and has a thriving community living within its 17th century walls which are 20 metres thick. The historical value of the fort was recognised by UNESCO which listed it as a World Heritage Site in 1988. The Amangalla resort offers four kinds of accommodation to guests: Bedrooms, Chambers, Suites and The Garden House. Each guestroom comes with a spacious bathroom including twin vanities and a free-standing bath. The luxurious two-storey Garden House features a chaise lounge, banquette, daybed and a pantry serviced by a private butler. To escape the heat of the day, retreat to the verandah of The Zaal, or The Great Hall, for refreshing drinks and light snacks. For a grand colonial experience, The Dining Room serves breakfast, lunch and dinner complete with elegant antique furniture and silverware, and provides a choice of traditional Sri Lankan curries. The Baths offer a chance for even more indulgence in one of their treatment rooms, sauna, steam room, plunge pool or the hydrotherapy and water massage pool. And a yoga and meditation pavilion can be found in the lush gardens. Cultural retreat For most of its past, Galle was a significant port. More than a thousand years ago it was an essential port of call for traders, followed by Marco Polo in 1299. It wasn't until the arrival of the Portugese in 1505 that a small foreign trading post was established. The Dutch captured Galle in 1640 and in 1684 the headquarters for the Commandeur were built, the start of what is now Amangalla. The ensuing 400 years saw pirates, traders and colonialists (both Dutch and English) leave an indelible stamp. Historical sites nearby include much older places of interest to visit such as a 2000-year-old Buddhist temple at Yatagala and another such temple at Pilano. This region also offers plenty of other interesting places such as the teeming rainforest, rice paddies, tea plantations and a coconut island surrounded by frangipani trees. Amangalla provides a truly unique base for exploring the rich history of the town as well as the scenic countryside, quaint villages and the wildlife of south-west Sri Lanka.
