Ringed by 43 hills, San Francisco's head may forever rest in the clouds, but this is certainly one down to earth city. It's up to you, however, to decide for yourself as you step out to get your bearings and take in the iconic sights. Absorb the beauty of the city's mist-shrouded waterfront along with superb vistas of Alcatraz Island and the symbol of the city, the Golden Gate Bridge, tethered across San Francisco Bay. You'll also make a stop at the Twin Peaks, two hills near the centre of the city. After your guided tour you will enjoy time at leisure, which is the perfect chance to explore Fisherman's Wharf, Pier 39 or famously crooked Lombard Street – just watch out for the cable cars! B WINE COUNTRY ADVENTURES Day 3. San Francisco, Napa Valley, Sausalito. One of the most famous wine-producing regions in all of North America, it is difficult to find another that comes close to the Napa Valley. Your discovery today takes place on the Napa Valley Wine Train where you'll step aboard in the historic town of Napa and relax in the 1952 glass-domed Vista Dome car. Enjoy a glass of local sparkling wine and a freshly prepared lunch as you pass through vineyards and wineries en route to the quaint village of St Helena. After disembarking, journey back to San Francisco, visiting beautiful Sausalito on the way. Located across the Golden Gate Bridge, this picturesque community is home to many boutiques. Enjoy time at leisure here. BL Day 4. San Francisco, Alcatraz, Yosemite National Park. Take a ferry to the prison-island of Alcatraz. Often referred to as 'The Rock', the small island was developed with facilities for a lighthouse, a military fortification, a military prison and a federal prison from 1933 until 1963. On arrival here, you'll learn about the history of the prison and its infamous inmates during a fascinating tour. This afternoon, head to Yosemite National Park, located in Central California's Sierra Nevada mountain range. Relax or explore the grounds of your lodge before dinner.
