LORD HOWE ISLAND Clothing Casual. Pack a jacket for cooler evenings as it can be windy in winter. Comfortable shoes are essential and good quality walking shoes are advisable for reef walking or bush walking (especially for the Mt Gower climb). Electricity Diesel generated, 240 volts. Bring a torch to assist in finding your way home at night as the island has no street lights. Time zone Summer – same as Sydney (Eastern Daylight/Summer Time). Winter, 30 minutes ahead of AEST. GMT plus 11 hours. Currency Australian dollars. Travellers' cheques can be cashed at the bank agencies or post office. Credit cards are widely accepted but there are no ATMs on the island. Tipping is not customary. Visas and health There are no entry requirements and Australian citizens don't need passports. Yachts need to make arrangements for pilotage and moorings. Getting there Qantaslink has direct flights from Sydney, Brisbane and Port Macquarie using De Havilland Dash 8 planes with a travel time of two hours. Details are available through the Qantas website. Activities - Visitors have the choice of active and relax- ing activities on Lord Howe Island. For the adventur- ous there is deep-sea and rock fishing, bush walking, and mountain climbing. There are also guided nature walks with local experts. Experience fish feeding at Ned's Beach, reef walks, scuba diving, snorkelling, or swimming in the crystal clear waters. Cruise round the island, take a scenic flight or see the underwater world in a glass-bottom boat cruise on the lagoon. North Bay is a great spot for picnics, bushwalking and birdwatching. Lord Howe Island Golf Club, and the Bowls Club welcome visitors. Tennis courts and kayaks can be hired. Shopping Guide - There is a general store and local produce and bulk groceries are available at the Co-Op. Larrups sells surf, swim and beach wear, while souvenirs are available at Thompsons General Store and the Museum and Visitor Centre. Liquor is available at the Liquor Store, check the Visitors Centre for opening hours.
