MAKENA
Makena is both the largest and smallest of Maui's resort destinations,
a contradiction that speaks to its dedication to the island's natural
beauty. The resort's boundaries include 1,800 acres of prime coastal
land just south of Wailea, but most of it remains in its natural state,
creating a setting of peace perfect for taking a step back ... or a jump
in. Its waters are simply irresistible, and you'll find paddleboarders,
canoers, kayakers, scuba divers, snorkelers and surfers in plenty in a
town whose name translates to "Place of Abundance." Not to worry–
when it comes to crowds, there are few; the name refers instead to
the marine life and plentiful sands on which to lounge on, right where
the state's largest dormant volcano meets a lava shoreline.
HANA
Far from the other resort areas of Maui is one community that's so
special that it's been called Maui County's "fourth island." This is
Hana, a rural resort area on Maui's northeastern tip, famed
for its romantic 52-mile Hana Highway. This route is an
attraction in and of itself, its 600 voluptuous curves and
54 one-lane bridges marked by splashing waterfalls,
ginger-scented air and moments of exhilaration.
Undeveloped, unchanged and unbelievable,
the end destination proves as
magical as the journey.
