She said WHAT? Shortage of engineers New Zealand, like many countries, has a shortage of engineers. In addition, our production of qualified engineers is low compared with other OECD countries. This means we sometimes struggle to maintain business as usual and are less able to move to the innovation-led economy the current government are so keen to promote. IPENZ believes female engineers could provide the solution. Currently just 13 per cent of New Zealand's engineers are female. 'Young women have the skills needed, but large numbers are not choosing to become engineers. This means the profession is missing out on their perspective and also that women are missing out on the challenging, exciting and rewarding careers that engineering offers,' says Tracey Ayre, Project Manger of the IPENZ Women in Engineering programme. Though many readers will not be around to see it, or will be watching developments from their retirement sofa, the country is going to be the only one in the club of mainly white, western, developed nations in growth mode, a study by global bank HSBC predicts. HSBC's modelling predicts that New Zealand will be rising up the per capita income rankings (26th compared to 28th today) and the six million Kiwis living here will see their economy growing at between 3-5 percent a year. The 'Giving New Zealand' Philanthropic Funding Report 2011', commissioned by Philanthropy New Zealand, shows that New Zealanders gave about $2.67 billion to charitable and community causes during 2011, compared to $1.27 billion estimated in a previous study in 2006. Personal donations and bequests from individu- als were the single largest source of philanthropy, contributing $1.55 billion (58 percent of total estimated giving) – an increase of 23 percent. Cathy worked as a journalist for radio and television for over 15 years after completing her studies in Wellington. It was during her work as a reporter that she met and married television producer, Ric Salizzo who created Sportscafe. "I think women sometimes think that they're being selfish if they do something for themselves. I think we just have to change that. Your financial life is everything and if you can't take care of yourself financially, how are you going to prepare for your kids and take care of them as well?" Kim Kiyosaki, author of It's Rising Time! What it really takes for the reward of financial freedom. "Too often we are told BOTPA (Because of the Privacy Act) explains why an agency failed to release information when in fact the failure to disclose has nothing to do with the Act." Mai Chen, partner in Chen Palmer and author of Public Law Toolbox "Japanese tourists staring at me through the window as I write at the Michael King Centre. Not sure what to do. What would a zoo animal do?" Wendyl Nissen, Columnist "So it is only February, but work already feels like I am eating an elephant with a teaspoon." Michele A'Court, Comedienne "Don't let yourself be defined by the competition." Ken Chenault, CEO Amex . So right on!" Sarah Robb O'Hagan, Chief Marketing Officer of Gatorade "Did you know that mobile device use now exceeds TV and computer use 5:1?" Laura Humphreys, Liber8 Me www.hermagazine.co.nz | 81
