MASTERCLASS three jobs 3 SURGEON About: Surgeons may do some or all of the following: examine patients and decide whether operations are needed, consult with other medical professionals about patient care and treatment, perform and manage operations, instruct and manage patients' post-operative care, check on patients progress while they are in hospital, keep medical records and send final reports to general practitioners, provide follow- up care for patients, teach medical students and trainee surgeons, carry out research. Education/ Requirements: Complete the Health Sciences First Year programme at Otago University, or the first year of either the Bachelor of Health Sciences or Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Science at Auckland University, complete a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) degree at Otago or Auckland, work for one year as an intern (supervised junior doctor) in a hospital, complete another six to eight years of specialist training and examinations to become a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons. Pay: Registrars working for a district health board (DHB) usually earn between $95,341 and $156,591 a year. Qualified surgeons working for a DHB usually earn between $131,168 and $199,350. Education/ Requirements: To become an advertising account manager you need a relevant tertiary qualification, such as a degree or diploma in advertising, marketing, communications, media studies or psychology. Pay: Entry-level advertising account executives and advertising account co-ordinators earn between $35,000 and $40,000 a year. With two to three years' experience you can earn between $42,000 and $45,000. Advertising account executives with three years' experience can become advertising account managers, and earn between $50,000 and $65,000. Senior advertising account managers with four to five years' experience can earn from $72,000 to $82,500. Advertising account directors (with at least five to six years' experience at an advertising agency) can earn between $90,000 and $102,500. Senior advertising account directors (with seven years' or more experience at an advertising agency) can earn between $115,000 and $134,875. Pay for self-employed advertising account managers may vary, and depends on their day or project rate, and length of contracts. Education/Requirements: Be a New Zealand resident, be at least 18 years old, hold a current first aid certificate, hold a current passport without restrictions, have a minimum of three years secondary education and pass aviation security clearance checks. Individual airlines may additional entry requirements. For instance, some airlines have height restrictions or require flight attendants to be able to swim at least 50 metres. Pay: New flight attendants typically earn between $25,000 and $33,500 a year, depending on whether they are working on domestic, trans-Tasman or international flights. With three to five years' experience, flight attendants could expect to earn $40,000 to $45,000, plus allowances. Senior flight attendants with 10 or more years' experience may earn $60,000 or more. Perks: Flight attendants receive discounted travel benefits, and may also get meal, accommodation, uniforms and grooming allowances. Allowances increase as flight attendants gain more senior positions, and may be worth more than $15,000 a year.
