it as part of my KidzGrab blog (which I had been told every business needs!). The figures for my blog started to soar and I realised that blogging wasn't just about writing business blogs, but about connecting with your customers too. My target audience for KidzGrab is primarily parents' 20- 45-years- old, so talking about weight loss and exercise is something that a great deal of these parents have either struggled with, or are still struggling with. Blogging is an awesome tool for reaching my KidzGrab fans on a whole new level. It raises awareness of my business without constantly advertising to them. I have started to write about other subjects that I think are important to parents, and the reaction has been overwhelming. Blogging really is good for your business, yes it takes up time in your day and yes it's what I do still at 10.00 p.m. at night (struggling with the work boundaries issue still!) but I really feel like it reaches people. I, too, have discovered some amazing bloggers out there and learned so much from them about what works for their businesses, their up's and downs, and successes and failures. It's a whole new world of information completely unchartered for me. If you don't blog or read blogs give it a go, it has a wealth of information! We are into February now and business is picking up. We have larger companies joining us and I feel like we are finally being noticed as a player in the game. I think setting the business up was far harder than I every imagined, it has been extremely challenging, physically and mentally exhausting and terrifying at times. There are things with hindsight I would have done differently, but I have learned from every experience and just keep moving forward. If I had my time over would I do it again? Absolutely yes, it has been so far the ride of a lifetime. I don't know where we will be in year's time, but I am looking forward to finding out! To start with I wouldn't have let my business partners go off on a three month trip just as we decided to start building the site! Seriously though, I think we all wish we had hindsight, but there are really only a couple of things I would have done differently. The main thing I probably would not have done was the Telstra concert. Although it was a phenomenal success it took up a huge amount of time to organise, and at such an early point in our business I think it was too much to take on. We should really have just sold tickets for the event – organising the event was simply too much and event management is a field all of it's own for a reason! Time, I have learnt, is such a precious commodity when you are starting a business and time management is an absolute must otherwise you will burn out very quickly! October – Parent and Child show and finally we launch KidzGrab on October 22 at 11.00 p.m. November – Organising the big concert at Telstra Clear Event Centre for an expected 6,000 strong crowd. December – Polkadots Show and our launch January – Surviving the silly season. With a late launch we simply are not ready for Christmas, and January is an uphill battle as is the case for so many Kiwi businesses. February – With Christmas behind us and the Polkadots concert a distant memory we concentrate our efforts on new merchants and expanding our database. March – We start taking on new staff and explore possible media campaigns to start growing our company. www.hermagazine.co.nz | 57
