With regard to clarity – you need to research, research, research. I can't stress this enough, especially when it comes to: •Establishing what your point of difference is. What makes you stand out from your competitors; why should customers choose you? •Pitching your price at a realistic point. What are people going to be willing to pay? You can do a lot of the research yourself using the internet. Check out your competitors; what their price points are, who their distributors are, how your offering will stand out from the crowd, etc. The other vital action I can't stress enough is to network, network, network! Talk to other Kiwi exporters in your market or field, learn from their experience, collect tips, ideas and inspiration. Marketing doesn't have to be expensive; some clever thinking can go a long way. Raw dog food company, K9 Natural from Christchurch started with a limited budget but used the internet and social media to great effect. Director Geoff Bowers says, "Target the people you're looking to connect with. We chose dog trainers, breeders and opinion leaders. We joined blogs, posted comments, set up Twitter and Facebook profiles, and it was all free!" Cultural awareness is often an overlooked but crucial consideration. Different cultures need to be taken into account, especially when considering your marketing and promotion strategy. Other considerations include: •Regulations – find out about any barriers, taxes, duties, health & safety, labelling, trademarks or patents required. •Freight issues – decide on the best mode of transport, freight forwarder and packaging for your product, as well as cargo insurance and documentation. •Supplying the market – follow up with your supplier/buyer and customers. Ensure you are prepared for continuity of supply and developing new markets and products to keep ahead of the competition. This is by no means a complete list, but a starter for 10!
