tech tools Tech Tools Three gadgets you will love at work and play THERE ARE SOME TECH tools that I find amazing for keeping both mobility and productivity together. Using technology to increase productivity is a great thing. Here are three of my favourite gadgets that keep me both working and playing! SMARTPHONES For most of us, our phones have become a part of us. If you have iPhone 4 Blackberry For the Blackberry I have the touch screen model as well as I love this technology a gadget you're going to carry around with you everywhere, you really should get the most out of it. If you upgrade from a standard phone to a smartphone, there's a whole world of new things you can do. • Web Access Everywhere - The browsers on smartphones have improved dramatically, and wireless access is much, much faster. • Email to your phone - If you don't spend every minute of the day at your desk you may find the benefits of receiving your email on your phone creates new workflow opportunities in your day. Also just getting an early heads up on something that may require some thought before responding is great as you can process the information while getting on with the rest of your day. • MP3 player - most high-end phones can be your portable MP3 player. • Finding Your Way - There's another popular gadget the right smartphone can replace: a GPS. Plenty of high-end phones have navigation capabilities these days, and they can give you turn- by-turn, spoken directions. • Your phone can tell you exactly where you are, and show you your location on a map. PORTABLE PRINTERS If you're nowhere near an office, then these portable printers can roll out on-the-spot documents. Great for printing your appointments, contracts, and sales information. Ever needed a product information pamphlet and found you just gave away your last one to the previous client. No problem just print one off for your customer right away. • Great for printing directions and maps. • With options like battery, Bluetooth and wireless printing available. • For a bit of fun check out the fact that some models can also print photo quality prints if you are looking to print those holiday snapshots as you go. Great for leaving with people you just shared a memory with. 68 | www.hermagazine.co.nz Apple iPad2 (Home) Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 (work) My staff are starting to use the Samsung Galaxy Tablet as a tool… and toy! TABLETS I love the touch screen technology. • • Physical size is big factor. Light, easy to carry, easy to hold while using. Speed of application start up times and • • • ease of going online. The long battery life of these devices is another advantage. For travelling I find this is essential. The bonus of having your own music, movies and electronic books at your fingertips is fantastic. • From a productivity perspective I leave the Mail app open, which lets me quickly see if I have new messages. For meetings you can jot down notes and download any relevant documents you may need to reference, into the tablet. That way, you won't have to shuffle through a pile of papers searching for a specific chart or diagram. • Tablets are great for sharing photos and 1-on-1 presentations. Becoming a must have for sales staff. • Tablets are good for travel. The large screen is great for maps, guides, and dictionaries. Canon ip100 portable printer Enjoy both work and play with this fantastic technology. Cliff Salter www.pchardware.co.nz
