Lest she be misunderstood, however, Katz stresses that both approaches are flawed for anybody in the business of making a profit and staying competitive. After all, companies that have a strong masculine approach to conflict resolution—effectively a 'take-no-prisoners' culture—aren't really in much of a psychological position to learn much from their past mistakes, let alone set the stage from achieving the best results for future disputes. That can't be good for competitiveness. But companies taking an oh-so-light feminine approach, there are far fewer of these she admits, are by definition also laying a welcome mat for a reduction in competitiveness. What to do? Well, whether or not businessmen really hail from Mars and businesswomen from Venus, it seems to me that the place we all need to go to get commercial disputes resolved is on planet Earth, ideally along business-friendly lines that transcend the above mentioned stereotypes, and make equal commercial sense across the gender divide. These are just a few guidelines for you the next time you need to resolve conflict with another person. As my stateside counterpart points out, it's not that we can or should change our basic nature. What's important for everyone, businesswoman or businessman a like, is enhancing our positive qualities.
