let's hear it from the boys MALCOLM HAS BEEN AWARDED the Green Ribbon Award from the Ministry for the Environment, plus two environmental awards from the Auckland Regional Council. His company, ecostore is currently a Deloitte Fast 50 company and was the 2009 NZ Sustainable Business of the Year. Malcolm has been active in the sustainable scene for over 25 years. He co-founded NZ's first permaculture eco-village in 1986, and was a foundation member of the sustainable business network. Malcolm has been added to the World Class NZ international network and is the Chair of the Fairground Foundation, the sister organisation of ecostore. For two years he appeared weekly as 'ecoman' on TV1's Good Morning Show offering advice on how to 'green up' your life, and is still a frequent media commentator and regular radio guest on both sides of the Tasman. THE ONE THING I WISH I KNEW ABOUT WOMEN: Why they put up with men! 9-5 YOU WILL FIND ME: At the ecostore offices, either in Auckland or Melbourne. AFTER 5 YOU WILL FIND ME: At home with a glass of wine and my nose in a book or talking with my family WHY I LIKE LIVING IN… St Mary's Bay ,Auckland. I can walk to work, or to the Leys Institute and there are café's, restaurants, parks and beaches nearby. I CAN'T DO WITHOUT: Something to read. I've been known to read the backs of cereal boxes, or the newspaper wrapping on our fish and chips if I'm desperate. CELEBRATE: Every time I come back to New Zealand from overseas travel I'm so grateful to live here. Hearing someone say "sweet as" at the airport! UNDER-RATED: Boiled eggs cooked for 2 ½ minutes so they're still soft inside. MY FAVOURITE THINGS: Getting my hands in the soil, I get the chance to do this when I'm working on the land at our eco village up north. LAST MOVIE/CD/BOOK: I went to see John Le Carre's Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy. Gary Oldman was a fantastic Smiley. ALL TIME FAVOURITE BOOK/CD: Lord of the Rings trilogy – I read those books for the first time when I was eight-years- old and then another four times before I was 15. "The one ring to rule them all!" NEXT HOLIDAY: My wife, Melanie and I are going to trace some family connections she has in Manihiki, North West of Rarotonga. GUILTY PLEASURE: Cutting loose with the boys once a fortnight on 'boys night'. BEST ADVICE: Don't take offense. WOMAN YOU ADMIRE MOST: My wife Melanie, she's an artist and a poet who's just finished her masters in creative writing while working at ecostore, and she's an amazing mother and friend to our two daughters. Founder & CEO of Ecostore Company Limited YOUR MENTOR: I'm lucky to be working with David Irving, ex CEO of Watties, he has a very enabling attitude and I'm learning a lot from him. BEST HEALTH TIP: People sometimes don't realise that what you put on your skin is just as important as the food you eat, so it pays to read labels and avoid products with toxic petrochemicals whenever you can. If in doubt ask questions. FAVOURITE SAYING: Imagine what you'd like to be doing in 20 years time and do it now. BEST LIFE BALANCE TIP: Give yourself 'time out'. WORST MOMENT: Losing the funding for the second Merry Mid-Winter festival I was organising in Whangarei WHAT'S NEXT? Fairground Foundation is a not for profit I set up to use a percentage of profits from ecostore. It took longer than I imagined for ecostore to become profitable, so we've been getting by with small scale blog.Williams-Sonoma.com www.hermagazine.co.nz | 95 projects but I'm working on an urban eco village project that I'm really excited about. FAVOURITE RECIPE: I like to cook a whole organic chicken on the barbeque with chilies and courgettes and beans – the taste of summer! Malcolm Rands Let's hear it from the BOYS
