ROWERS PULLED TO SAFETY The cruise ship Crystal Serenity pulled two trans-Atlantic rowers to safety recently after they were capsized by a large wave around 450 miles west of the Canary Islands. The pair were competing along with 16 other crews in the 2011 Atlantic Rowing Race and had been drifting for 10 hours in their liferaft after their boat went down. The Crystal Serenity was part way through a cruise to St Maarten, an island in the Caribbean, when she received a call from Falmouth Coastguard. Her skipper, Captain Okland, turned south and proceeded at full speed to the stricken pair's position. With the weather worsening and keeping a sharp lookout for the other rowing teams in the area, a distress flare was seen and the pair brought safely aboard. The Crystal Serenity The 42300-tonne Seven Seas Voyager, operated by Regent Seven Seas Cruises, was heading toward New Zealand when she sustained minor damage and a small electrical fire broke out as she passed through storms in the Tasman Sea. As she was battered by rough seas and strong winds, a number of balcony dividers were smashed, along with several glass panels inside the ship. A small electrical fire broke out on the deck after sun-loungers and other deck furniture broke free of their lashings and crashed into electrical fittings. The fire was extinguished and the ship berthed safely berthed at Timaru. A range of air horns, designed specifically for use in the harsh marine environment.
