features such as low windowsills, large for'ard windows and a polycarbonate roof on the upper exterior deck. The main deck windows feature gutters to keep them clear of rainwater. The second goal was to minimise her impact on the environment. Significant steps were taken to reduce her wash and her fuel use, and all her waste is stored on board and discharged shore-side. The third goal was to ensure maximum reliability so that she required minimal maintenance. Breakdowns from unreliable motors in a remote location can be disastrous.
Her main engines and other equipment were selected on the basis of their track record and availability of parts, and operate well below their 100 percent maximum continuous rating. Her systems have been simplified and the structure has been over- designed to reduce fatigue. Her pair of MTU 12V 2000 M70 main engines each producing 785kW are coupled to a traditional drive chain by Henleys Propellers.

The twin 100mm 2205 stainless steel shafts are housed in Easiflow stern tube systems complete with Thordon bearings and 100mm Kiwi Shaft Seals. At the business end are twin-handed 39in x 5B Tiger propellers. Henleys also manufactured and supplied the twin rudders, stocks, seals and Nibral tiller arms. The Titiroa easily achieved her service speed of 25 knots fully loaded at 66 percent maximum continuous rating, or MCR during her trials and exceeded 30 knots in light load condition. Like all fast passenger catamarans, a high performance steering system is critical to her safe operation and on the Titiroa this was supplied by Innovations In Motion, the New Zealand distributors for TMQ autopilot, steering and navigations systems from Australia. The specification called for a high-speed steering system with three steering stations using joggle-style steering levers. Control of the vessel can easily be achieved at any of these stations and rudder angle indicators at each station ensures the skipper knows
