Q-West Boatbuilders in Wanganui won the contract to construct the Titiroa after Real Journeys reviewed yards within the Australia/New Zealand region. Titiroa is the fourth vessel Incat Crowther has designed for Real Journeys, and follows on from the Fiordland Flyer, Patea Explorer and Luminosa. Real Journeys was previously involved with Q-West in the construction of Meridian Energy's new vessel, the Mararoa. This experience, combined with the preference to support local suppliers, tipped the balance in favour for Q-West. Incat Crowther had completed the design and Q-West was ready to start construction when the financial crisis struck and the project was put on hold in 2009. However, in 2010 the decision was made to continue the project, and the break gave the company the opportunity to assess the design with fresh eyes. Several changes were made, including the passenger accommodation upstairs and the introduction of measures to keep the windows free of condensation. Real Journeys had to ensure Q-West took two key aspects of Fiordland into account during the build. The first is the rainfall, an average seven metres a year, and second, the native kea, which will remove rubber seals and strip wire with their strong beaks and claws within minutes of unsupervised activity. But the locals have become used to coping with the antics and damage these pesky native parrots may cause.
