Back in 1987 I had heard that many people who wanted to hire nurses for private work couldn't find nurses for the work. Some of the residential care facilities were also looking for agency nurses. The nursing agency wound up after a couple of years because an agency in Christchurch that was much larger had more capacity to fill local needs. I believe most of the larger centres have agency nurses. Achieving that all important work/life balance is difficult for a politician as so much is required outside the usual 9-5 workday. What do you do to ensure you make time for yourself? I get up early and get my exercise in before I start the work day. I also have fabulous people looking after my diary and they often "save me from myself". (Saying "no" is harder to do than people think!) 2011 was a milestone year for you; celebrating your 50th birthday. Are there any signs of slowing down in the foreseeable future or are you just getting started? I like to be busy and I have a job that I love that ensures I keep busy. Turning 50 is a milestone, but only one of many on the journey. It has been a rewarding year for me and I hope I find similar rewards amongst the challenges my new roles will present. Has there been any one person who has particularly influenced you politically? Not one person so much as attributes amongst a number of people that I admire and respect. For example, rt hon Dame Jenny Shipley's public speaking abilities and her purposeful style of setting goals and getting on with it. Rt Hon John Key's ability to "connect" with people from all walks of life and to lead a team of Ministers and MPs in a style that is firm, fair, not autocratic, and cuts to the bottom of what many New Zealanders want from their politicians. How important is it to have a supportive and encouraging partner? The most supportive factor of all. And my husband Mark is extraordinarily supportive, and being politically aware helps too! What do your daughters think about their mum being in the media? They, and my parents, find it difficult when I'm criticised, particularly when they feel it is unjustified. I have explained to them that when the criticism is unjustified they should "let it go", but when it's justified (and sometimes it will be) then support me to do better. What is the best piece of advice your daughters have given you? The most consistent and best piece of advice my daughters give me (frequently) is to 'chill out'! What is the most challenging element of being a politician in the public eye? Getting around the supermarket in a hurry! What is the highlight of your political career to date? Whilst being named a Minister for Portfolios is right up there, nothing beats being elected as an electorate MP, and I've had that joy and privilege three times now.
