"The market for art is much smaller in New Zealand compared to the United Kingdom, but harnessing the internet allows me access to a far greater market and I can sell my work to people all over the world."
includes in each of the paintings she creates. "My husband used to tell me about his
school when he was a child. There was a beautiful chapel and all the pews were made by an English carpenter called Robert 'Mouseman' Thompson. He carved a tiny mouse on every single piece of furniture he made, and not everyone knew it was there. Three years ago, I went to Rarotonga and I just adored the little lizards scuttling round at night. They seemed to appear out of nowhere and you could just see them peeping out from behind the curtain rail, or on top of the window frame. One night we were out for a meal and a little lizard appeared next to me on the table. It didn't move, so I popped some chocolate sauce from my dessert on to my finger and this little lizard ate it off my finger. Ever since then, I have been smitten." Since then the reptiles have been
camouflaged in her work; some are extremely hard to find so look very carefully. Ingrid's next solo show starts March 13,
at Parnell Gallery in Auckland. www.ingrid.co.nz
