96 Quebec - Montebello & Montreal QUEBEC - MONTEBELLO & MONTREAL French, British, and First Nations comingle in Quebec Province, and never more beautifully than in Montreal, a UNESCO City of Design and part of that organization's Creative Cities Network. Lofty titles to hold, its more poetic nicknames remain the "City of Saints" or that of "a Hundred Bell Towers"…but neither of these truly capture the utterly enchanting European charm and shy elegance of this city's historic district. Take a tour through time walking the cobblestoned streets, beginning with the 350-year-old Notre Dame Basilica, an unmistakable nod to its Gallic and Gothic roots. Representing the 19th century is the lovingly renovated Saint-Paul Street, with boutiques, art studios, residences, restaurants, and jazz clubs to bring you back into the present. A similar juxtaposition of old and new defines Bonsecours Market, nationally recognized as one of the ten most beautiful heritage buildings in Canada. As the headquarters of the Quebec Crafts Council, it's only fitting that its 15 boutiques and lovely restaurants offer the creations of some of the area's most talented artists, designers, and artisans. Loveliness isn't only limited to urban offerings; New York's Central Park architect, Frederick La Olmstead, masterminded Montreal's Mont Royal Park, and the city's botanical garden is the second-largest of its kind and viewable all year long. More bucolic still is nearby Montebello, a small village in the wide open country of Quebec, known for Fairmont Le Château Montebello, the largest log structure ever built, and the historic Manoir Papineau. Together, all are a testament to the commitment Montreal has made to bring a little bit of France to a big bit of Canada. 520 19 15 15 20 20 15 20 10 40 25 25 40 40 40 335 125 117 520 335 138 138 132 134 R.
