NZ boatbuilders win big
THREE NEW ZEALAND superyacht companies have enjoyed success at recent international design awards. McMullen and Wing's Big Fish won the award for the best motoryacht in the 40-65m category at the ISS Design Awards and the motoryacht naval architecture award for her designer Gregory C Marshall Naval Architects in the 2011 ShowBoats Design Awards. The awards were held during the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show, held in Florida from October 25 to 29. "Despite the fact that Aquos Yachts is still a newcomer in the yachting marketplace, we are especially pleased at the great reception Big Fish continues to receive," said the company's marketing consultant, Jim Gilbert. Big Fish is in the Canary Islands and will return to the South Pacific in the New Year.
She has completed about 45,000 miles of cruising, says Gilbert.
The owner of the Zefira, built by Fitzroy Yachts, received awards for best crew and service areas and best exterior design and styling at the ShowBoats Design Awards ceremony in Florida. The team at Alloy Yachts had their talent and efforts acknowledged with Kokomo, designed by Dubois Naval Architects, winning the naval architecture award for sailing yachts at the same awards.
Warm summer likely for most
LA NIÑA CONDITIONS are likely to continue through the summer, (December to February), according to NIWA's National Climate Centre, although it is unlikely to be as strong as the previous La Niña event of last year.
The tropical Pacific is currently showing weak to moderate La Niña conditions. The Southern Oscillation Index has been consistently positive for the last three months, and sea surface temperature anomalies have become increasingly negative in the east-central equatorial Pacific.
The majority of global climate models which predict El Niño- Southern Oscillation conditions are forecasting the continuation of weak to moderate La Niña conditions into early 2012. Mean sea level pressures during the summer are likely to be above normal across the South Island, with weaker than normal westerlies over the North Island.
Seasonal temperatures are likely to be above average on
the West Coast of the South Island and near average or above average across the remainder of the country.
Rainfall is likely to be normal over the South Island, except
for the West Coast, where it may be slightly drier than usual. Rainfall will vary over the North Island, being normal to below normal in the southwest, normal in the east and normal or above normal in the north, according to NIWA.
For the tropical cyclone season the chance of an ex-tropical cyclone passing close to New Zealand during the period December to May is below the long-term average, where at least one passes within 500km of New Zealand in nine out of 10 cyclone seasons.
Sea surface temperatures are likely to remain above average to the northeast of the North Island, but near average elsewhere about the New Zealand coast. River flows are likely to be nearly normal in the east of both islands and normal or below normal elsewhere.
