In keeping with river jetboats, the helmstation is part way for'ard on the port side
drowning of the famous Pink and White Terraces in 1886 on the edge of Lake Rotomahana, beneath Mount Tarawera. Up to 23 active natural geysers play freely throughout the area and according to one geothermal consultant, Orakei Korako has the greatest number of active geysers of any geothermal field in New Zealand, with the most variable and interesting changes. The park is only accessible by boat, with the fare being included in the admission fee. The new 8.1m waterjet-powered ferry which carries tourists across the 250m stretch of water to the thermal park was modeled on the older, existing vessel. She had given 38 years of service but was finally getting a bit tired, and Craig was looking to update her.
Because most visitors are free and independent travelers, the ferry is operated on demand during the day, taking up to 27 passengers per trip.
Designed by Maxwell and Hall and built by Profile Boats, the
new, shallow-draft vessel is constructed in marine alloy. She is fully enclosed, with large windows or roll-up clear plastic screens right around for viewing and bench seats running lengthwise.
