OBITUARY TONY BOUZAID DECEMBER 13, 1940 – OCTOBER 17, 2011 ISLAND IDENTITY HAD SEVERAL PASSIONS BY MIKE PIGNÉGUY T ony Bouzaid was not one for sitting around waiting for things to happen. Being a man of vision, he was also an innovator and always pushed the boundaries in everything he tackled. While still in their teens, Tony and his brother Chris inherited their father's sailmaking business, Sails and Covers. The brothers became accomplished sailors in their own right, with Chris winning the prestigious One Ton Cup in Rainbow II, while Tony won the Sanders Cup in 1963 sailing the three- man X class. He won it again in 1966 while crewing for Don Lidgard and then started sailing 12ft skiffs. The brothers next built the then-radical foam and glass skiff Query and went on to win the championship for the Silasec Trophy in 1967-68 and the JJ Giltinan Trophy in 1972. Tony commissioned Laurie Davidson to build the half- tonner Waverider and sailed her to wins in the World Half Ton Cup in England in 1978 and in Holland the following year, when he was also New Zealand Yachtsman of the Year. Tony became an active conservationist and was instrumental in creating the Glenfern Sanctuary It was the beginning of match racing in New Zealand, and MASTER Applications are invited from exceptional candidates for a senior role as a Master with New Zealand's leading ISO9001:2008 certified marine contractor which has offices in Wellington, New Plymouth, Tauranga and Dubai. While his family was young he was tireless in teaching many youngsters the finer points of sailing, with many of them later following successful sailing careers. Tony later founded Structureflex, specialising in the new area of tension membrane structures, including innovative flexible tanks. Structureflex has become a world leader, winning several awards for its products. In 1992, Tony and his wife Mal moved to Great Barrier Island and purchased Fitzroy House on Kotuku Peninsula, overlooking Port Fitzroy. Tony became an active conservationist and was instrumental in creating the Glenfern Sanctuary on their property. After nearly 20 years, over 10,000 native trees have been planted and a 2km predator-proof fence constructed, making the area a wonderful, safe refuge for many endangered native birds. In 2005 he received a Department of Conservation award for his preservation of bush and wildlife. One of Tony's other passions was keeping the many beautiful anchorages of the Hauraki Gulf, especially those in Port Fitzroy, preserved in their natural state for future generations of yachties to enjoy. He was an active member of the Gulf Anchorages Protection Society and his knowledgeable input will be sorely missed. Both conservationists and boaties have lost a strong advocate. VIP.S85
