GRENADA Nutmeg, cinnamon, ginger and vanilla waft in the breezes of the "Spice Island of the Caribbean," a fragrant destination that boasts more spices per square mile than anywhere else on the planet, producing one-third of the world's nutmeg. However, the essence of this island isn't limited to spice—45 white beaches and nine novel black sand shores lend visual character to this sensory mix, and island-wide music and cultural festivals from February into August and throughout December bring a whole new set of color to the towns. Taste buds come alive in Market Square and at the multitude of restaurants on Grand Anse. To slake the thirst—and curiosity—of rum connoisseurs, the Caribbean's only water-powered mill for the River Antoine Rum Distillery also draws its share of visitors, not far from the Grenada Chocolate Company, a solar-powered, pint-sized cottage organic factory. To get even closer to the source, a tube ride down the Balthazar River to the estate leads visitors to organic cocoa, an organic goat dairy, and fresh-caught seafood served every Friday. After all, every road leads to water in Grenada. Known as a premier yachting center, it's equally renowned for game fishing, with trophies like billfish, marlin, sailfish, wahoo, yellowfin tuna and mahi-mahi. Divers visit just for the Bianca C, the largest underwater wreck in the Caribbean. Even the plentiful hiking trails lead to multi-tiered waterfalls or back down to beaches, where visitors can go whale- and dolphin-watching or kayaking in quiet Egmont Harbor. In Grenada, you can spice it up however you like. Westerhall Bay Great Bacolet Bay Grenville Bay Great River Bay Grenada Bay St. Mark Bay Gouyave Bay Grand Mal Bay St.George's Pt. Salines Int'l.
