"The Smoke that Thunders" does so on the border of Zimbabwe and Zambia, as unchanged and unrelenting as it was when it was discovered in 1855, stretching across 5,603 sprawling feet and plummeting an average of over 300 feet into an awesome abyss. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, walkable from a town of the same name on the Zimbabwean side, where 16 viewing points are located, Victoria Falls is the largest uninterrupted sheet of falling water on the planet. Fed by the Zambezi River, its thousand-foot sprays are visible from up to 30 miles away, but travelers come from around the world to get as close as possible to this wonder. Bungee jumpers take the 365-foot plunge from the Victoria Falls Bridge; swimmers float in the Zambian natural rock Devil's Pool; canoers take guided trips upriver; white water rafters find exhilaration in the river's foam; and rainforest hikers keep a keen eye open for crocodiles and hippos in the lagoons. Golfing and bird watching can be one and the same in this haven for adventure tourism, but aside from the cries of "fore!", the region remains yet unchanged as when Scottish missionary and explorer David Livingstone declared the views as "scenes so lovely [they] must have been gazed upon by angels in their flight."
