Mexico's oldest and most popular resort destination continues to hold its luster more than 50 years since it first became a favorite of American Hollywood jetsetters. Richly set on two stunning bays, the Bay of Santa Lucia and Puerto Marqués, and only ten minutes away from 1950s hot spots Caleta and Caletilla Beach's gentle waves, the glitz of this city can be found in the resorts that line the shores and the glamorous restaurants that peer down from dramatic cliffs, as they serve signature renditions of pescado a la talla—a favorite fish dish. This downward perspective has fascinated many, as international attraction La Quebrada proves. Here, divers train their entire lives to take the plunge 136 feet into the Pacific Ocean. But for guests who prefer a view from below, the sport fishing of dorado, marlin and snappers enthrall, and divers and snorkelers are often rewarded with sightings of turtles, sea snakes, eagle rays, and even friendly whale sharks among the shipwrecks and coral reefs that rest just off shore. The San Diego Fort, built in 1616 and the current site of the History Museum, is a must-see, and the Costera Miguel Aleman, the city's most famous boulevard, glitters every night. Sultry nightlife and splashy lounges deliver exuberant action and the carefree party atmosphere this destination is renowned for, welcoming travelers to a continuing golden age of the Pacific Coast.
