PERU Peru is a country where majesty reigns, rising out of the forests of the Amazon basin and the cities of the Incan Empire to meet the snow-capped Andes. The culmination of all this greatness is the fabled Machu Piccu, an awe-inspiring Incan city dramatically sitting 1,000 feet above a river, straddled between two mountains. Nearby Cusco, once the capital of the Incan Empire, is now a bustling metropolitan area. While the Spanish eventually constructed a cobblestone city in Cusco, you can still explore Incan remains. With its subtropical beaches, clubs and cafes, there's plenty of fun to be had in Lima, but the Incan culture is always nearby. Pachacamac is a huge Incan archaeological site near the city, and Lima's museums are the best for documenting its pre-historic peoples. 0 400 miles 0 400 km Lima La Paz Quito Cusco Iquitos Trujillo Callao Arequipa Nazca S O U T H P A C I F I C O C E A N P E R U BOLIVIA CH I LE COLOMB IA BRAZI L ECUADOR Machu Picchu 36 Peru
