38 Southern Italy In the balmy climes of Southern Italy, you'll find the sun-drenched romance so often equated with Italy. The scenic towns of Positano and Sorrento are nestled within stunning cliffside enclaves, with picturesque villas and cobblestone streets winding their way to the sea. Naples offers the classic cuisine that has made Italy a gourmet haven for decades. From here you can find the jagged peak of Vesuvius, and visit the emotionally powerful and historically invaluable remains of nearby Pompeii and Herculaneum. Puglia is located at the heel of Italy's "boot," and it features some of the brightest seas, exquisite beaches and the charming whitewashed, cone-shaped houses called trulli. In addition to the jagged peaks of Vesuvius, Southern Italy offers historical treasures galore, including the well-preserved Greek temples at Pestrum and the Sassi, or cave city of Matera. 38 Southern Italy SOUTHERN ITALY
