26 Rome ROME Every street in Rome seems to hold thousands of years of history in its very stones. The Eternal City, where emperors once walked triumphantly, is an amazing experience in the truest sense of the word. It is a modern city that displays its glorious past with pride. Whichever way you turn, you're destined to see something that will leave you breathless. You can almost picture the gladiator fights of 2,000 years ago in the magnificent Coliseum. Caesar's orations still echo from the ruins of the Roman Forum. The splendid Pantheon will impress you with its perfectly preserved aura of hushed awe. When visiting the lovely Spanish Steps, or Trevi Fountain, a masterpiece of Baroque design, you'll see why Rome fills the imaginations of so many admirers. Exploring the Vatican is a journey unto itself. From the inspiring Sistine Chapel to Michelangelo's stirring Pieta and the majesty of St. Peter's Basilica, you'll leave this place of brilliance with a special appreciation for the wonders of great artistic creation.
