32 Venice Built on 117 small islands at the northern end of the Adriatic Sea, Venice is unlike any other city in the world. No matter how many times you have seen photograph of it, nothing will prepare you for the real thing. You must walk everywhere in Venice, and where you can't walk, you go by water. Venice has 150 canals and more than 400 bridges, with its historic center divided into six quarters. The main thoroughfare is the Grand Canal that intersects each of the six quarters as it twists along the length of Venice. One of the best ways to explore the architectural beauty of the city is by a romantic gondola ride along the Grand Canal allowing you a unique vantage point to admire palaces and buildings along the water. Filled with hundreds of years of history, the Palazzo Ducale and St. Marks Basilica exude pure Venetian culture, and the magnificent façade is a sight unto itself. Venice's culture reigns during the world-famous Carnival, held each year in February, where masks and 18th century attire create a magical tradition, and the event itself is undoubtedly one of the world's most unique experiences. While you can easily spend weeks visiting the amazing sights of Venice, the city is also a popular weekend destination or a wonderful addition to an extended stay in Italy. BAUER L'HOTEL o o o o o The Bauer L'Hotel is a fine example of 1940s Italian architecture, and sits in the heart of Venice, overlooking the Baroque church of San Moise and the Canal Camp San Moise. HOTEL GRITTI PALACE o o o o o In February 2013, the majestic Gritti Palace re-opened its doors following a significant and extensive restoration.
