On the slip the Carol Linda got a very good birthday clean up as well as the new mast failure contaminating the fish caught with hydraulic oil was virtually eliminated. Having two power packs installed to allow for redundancy, with the ability to operate all boom and deck winch functions from a single auxiliary 100hp electric driven hydraulic power pack (note, not at 100 percent specification) and the ability to easily tune winch speeds, the main Ringmain system vastly improved the hydraulic systems flexibility and back up capability when fishing. Phil says that "In Port" operations also became efficient, as either one of the two 100hp hydraulic power packs could cater for the unloading winch and boat davit operations or even lifting the skiff. The new mast construction and installation complemented the hydraulic system and allowed the smooth transition of the hydraulic lines from the wet deck up and out to all starboard, port and the main boom winch and power block functions. The new mast and supporting hydraulics system posed a significant challenge to meet the new anticipated maximum safe working loads when fishing. The main power block imported from the United States is huge, with a hauling power of 13 tonnes along with a 20 tonne lifting capacity on the main boom, add to this 12.5 tonnes of line lull on the brailing winches, plus the many differing loads and a dozen or so other winches further demonstrate the enormous hydraulic power required to operate these vessels at work. Final load testing procedures were provided to the yard to allow the new mast and booms to be tested as required in the ABS Lifting code. Commissioning confirmed the systems performance and flexibility and feedback from the crew on board following fishing trials and on re-entering service has been great. The new crow's nest suits the operation perfectly, ensuring there is adequate space and comfort for manning the huge binoculars mounted on their supporting plinth, and the sliding and hinged windows allow uninterrupted vision and air flow through the space. During the project, the owner took the opportunity to have a new and more powerful skiff built. The skiff built by Ship Repair New Zealand was an evolution of a well proven MID designed skiff, with several already in service around the Pacific for local and international clients. The new skiff produced a 9.35 tons (8.482 metric tonnes) successful bollard pull during hand over trials which was in excess of the specified load required. Response from the crew during the bollard pull trials in Whangarei and then the ship's sea trials once back fishing off Pago Pago, are that the crew and client are delighted with the performance of the new skiff. However, the success story is probably best summed up with the owner's and masters' comments; they are more than happy with the performance and improved catching capability that the Carol Linda is demonstrating now she is back in service doing what she was designed to do – catching tuna in the Pacific in a cost effective and efficient manner.
