Oberammergau
& The Passion Play
Nestled in the foothills of the Bavarian Alps, the
picturesque village of Oberammergau looks as though
it has been lifted from the pages of a storybook. Colourful
frescoes decorate centuries-old buildings, alpine meadows
stretch toward dramatic limestone peaks and traditions
passed down through generations remain an essential part
of daily life.
Every ten years, this peaceful mountain town becomes
the stage for one of the world's most remarkable cultural
events: the Oberammergau Passion Play.
WHAT IS OBERAMMERGAU?
Oberammergau lies in southern Bavaria, about 30
kilometres from the Austrian border, surrounded by the
rugged beauty of the Ammergau Alps. The region's
distinctive limestone mountains were shaped over
millions of years through a natural process called
karstification, where slightly acidic rainwater gradually
dissolves rock and creates caves, valleys and jagged peaks.
Today, the landscape is a patchwork of alpine
forests, green pastures and rushing mountain streams.
is dramatic setting has influenced local traditions for
centuries, including the village's renowned woodcarving
craftsmanship and its distinctive painted buildings.
As you walk through Oberammergau's streets, you
will notice the town's most striking artistic tradition:
Lüftlmalerei. ese elaborate frescoes transform building
facades into vivid storytelling canvases, depicting biblical
scenes, fairy tales and historic events. Painted using
traditional fresco techniques, the murals bond directly
with wet plaster, allowing them to withstand the region's
harsh alpine weather while preserving their remarkable
color and detail.
Visitors will also discover a welcoming village atmosphere,
with traditional bakeries, artisan workshops and cafés
where locals gather to enjoy coffee and cake. Even outside
of Passion Play years, Oberammergau remains a beloved
destination for travelers seeking authentic Bavarian culture
and breathtaking alpine scenery.
