where American POWs were held captive

GASTRONOMY
Whether you are keen on fine dining or
street food delicacies, Hanoi is a real culinary
destination. Due to its location, the food
culture here is heavily influenced by Chinese
traditions. The intoxicating flavours, healthy
dishes and fresh seasonal produce result in a
dynamic, constantly evolving cuisine.
The famous Vietnamese dish phở (noodle
soup) is a Hanoi favorite. And bún chả—
grilled pork with rice vermicelli noodles—is
a tasty dish with fresh herbs and dipping
sauce. These meals are of ten enjoyed for
breakfast, at home or at street-side eateries.
French influences still abound in restaurants
throughout the city, from the baguette-
based banh mi sandwich to patisseries and
bakeries selling croissants and other French
treats, of ten with an Asian twist.
SHOPPING
Head for the Old Quar ter—also known
as the "36 Streets"—which dates back
hundreds of years. There is a Shoe Street,
a Lantern Street, a Sugar Street, and so on.
Hang Gai Street (Silk Street) is par ticularly
lovely, with beautiful wooden shopfronts.
Or shop with locals at the Dong Xuan
Market, which sells ever y thing imaginable
over four floors.
