The Star Theater will feature everything from a high-definition film of a beloved opera to a lively production of ABBA's biggest hits with guests singing along. On my recent trip I loved the show tunes, with songs from the likes of The Greatest Showman and Les Misérables by the talented cast, with impressive digital backdrops. SERENE SPACES Everyone has a favorite spot on a Viking ship. It could be the airy Atrium with its grand piano and giant images of Edvard Munch artwork. Or perhaps it is the upper level of the Explorers' Lounge, with panoramic views of the journey ahead and a trove of antiques. For others, it could be the warmed ceramic beds in The Nordic Spa, or the main pool with its retractable roof open to the sun, or one of the dining venues—traditional afternoon tea in the Wintergarden or a lavish Tuscan dinner in Manfredi's Italian Restaurant spring easily to mind. The Living Room, showcasing the ship's chic and serene Scandinavian style, will get plenty of guests' votes—as will Torshavn®, the intimate, lively music venue where the Viking Band plays jazz and danceable rock classics. For me, though, my secret pleasure is somewhere more unsung. At each 'corner' of the outside top deck is a comfy seating area from which I can enjoy sweeping sea or port The Nordic Spa Aquavit Terrace views. Even when full, a Viking ship never feels crowded, yet in these al fresco pockets, I found an extra sense of peace, enhanced by the little rock gardens in containers. AREAS OF SERENITY Another treat for me is to take a plate of goodies from the World Café (I recommend the giant crab claws) out on to the Aquavit Terrace, a lovely spot with an inviting infinity pool overlooking the ship's wake far below. And I never miss the opportunity to visit The Nordic Spa, where any guest can simply walk in and enjoy the main facilities without booking or charge. This time I chatted with other guests on the underwater rack in the hydrotherapy pool, surrounded by bubbles, admiring the use of natural materials that are evident throughout the ship—in the spa's case, elements such as Swedish slate and juniper wood panels. A SANCTUARY FOR UNWINDING I must talk here about the most important part of the ship—the sanctuary that is your stateroom. Every stateroom comes with a private veranda, a super-smart bathroom with a heated floor, plenty of storage space and possibly the most comfortable bed in which I have ever slept. Needless to say, these delightful details were enthusiastically discussed with the next Viking crew member who happened to be passing. Everyone has a favorite spot on a Viking ship. It could be the airy Atrium with its grand piano and giant images of Edvard Munch artwork. Or perhaps it is the upper level of the Explorers' Lounge, with panoramic views of the journey.
