LEARN ABOUT INDIGENOUS CULTURES
Long before the Gold Rush, Alaska was home to vibrant indigenous communities whose
cultures continue to shape the region today. Across Southeast Alaska, the artistry of the Tlingit,
Haida and Tsimshian peoples is visible in intricate totem poles, clan houses and storytelling
traditions passed down for generations. Visit places like Saxman Native Village or Totem Bight
State Park to witness towering totems carved with ancestral symbols. Or visit the native village
of Klukwan in the Chilkat Valley and witness performances of traditional songs and dances that
highlight the tribe's Tlingit heritage.
